Diabetes UK
Western Union has worked closely with Diabetes UK for the last 3 years, supporting a range of initiatives to educate the community at large about the prevalence of diabetes among the ethnic communities and how to deal with it. Western Union sponsored a range of ethnic fact sheets translated into Gujarati, Punjabi, Bengali, Hindi, Cantonese and Urdu that have been distributed throughout community and health centres across the country.
Western Union also received a special commendation from Sir Michael Hurst, Chairman of Diabetes UK, for its work with the charity.
Fulham Football Club
Western Union has been the Official Racial Awareness partner of Fulham FC for the last 3 years. With the help of Western Union, the Fulham FC Community team have actively worked with the local schools and community centres to promote the game of football, proudly bringing together children and adults from all different backgrounds to enjoy the spirit of the game.
The Racial Awareness partnership of Western Union and Fulham FC communicates the key message ‘Different Cultures, Same Game, fully endorsing the campaign to kick racism out of football.
Western Union and Fulham FC were also winners of the Ethnic Minority Sportsmatch award 2004.
London Cricket League
The Elliott Davis London Cricket League has been partnered with Western Union since 2002. The league has been growing steadily until it reached a capacity of teams in 2005, with teams representing London communities from Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Caribbean and East & West Africa.
Through its sponsorship, Western Union is proud to have been able to bring competitive cricket to so many people in London, bringing together different ethnic communities in great team spirit.
London Nigeria Football
Western Union has begun its third successive year as sponsors of London Nigeria Football Club (LNFC).
Similar to the Fulham FC project, LNFC are keen to get young kids off the street and instead to participate in the game of football, cultivating team spirit and social harmony. LNFC actively organise workshops and training sessions with disadvantaged youngsters from black and minority ethnic communities in and around the M25.
In 2004 FEXCO MT won the prestigious government run Sportsmatch Awards for the ethnic sports category for its work in the community with Fulham FC and came runner-up in the same category for its sponsorship and community work undertaken in conjunction with London Nigeria FC.
